Subject: Survey of Juvenile Justice Mental Health Assessment
Practices

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------Columbia University's Center for the Promotion of
Mental Health in Juvenile
Justice is conducting a survey of mental health
assessment practices in
juvenile justice settings. Collaborators in the
survey include the American
Probation and Parole Association, the Council of
Juvenile Correctional
Administrators, and the New York State Office of
Mental Hygiene.

The Center is conducting the survey to identify
the procedures used to
assess the mental health needs of youth in the
juvenile justice system and
to refer them for services. The Center is also
interested in finding out
what mental health and juvenile justice
practitioners believe should be done
in this area.

Survey responses will inform the Center's upcoming
Consensus Conference on
April 17, 2002. For that conference, researchers
and practitioners will
collaborate to develop practical guidelines
regarding best practices for
mental health assessments in the juvenile justice
system.

The Center for the Promotion of Mental Health in
Juvenile Justice invites
professionals working in the juvenile justice
system to participate in this
important survey.

practitioners working in the juvenile justice
system and another for
non-mental health staff.
